Why Dubai bathrooms need a different stone spec

Dubai bathrooms age stone faster than temperate climates do, and the usual cause is water and air movement rather than the marble itself.

Humidity and AC cycling. A chilled apartment and a bathroom that has just run a hot shower create a steady wet and dry cycle. Marble moves slightly with it. If the top is locked rigidly to the carcass at every point, that movement eventually shows as a hairline crack near the basin cut-out. We keep a small allowance for movement and seal the wall joint with neutral-cure silicone instead of grout.

Hard water. The desalinated supply leaves calcium and magnesium behind when it dries. Standing water around the tap base and basin rim etches polished marble and dulls the shine. A honed or lightly brushed finish hides this far better than a mirror polish in a bathroom that is used every morning.

Heat and sunlight. In an Abu Dhabi villa with an afternoon-facing bathroom window, surface temperature swings through the day and the sealer breaks down faster. Those rooms need re-sealing more often, usually twice a year rather than once.

Marble vs quartz vs porcelain for a vanity top

Marble wins on appearance and repairability. Quartz wins on zero maintenance. Porcelain sits between the two and is the thinnest of the three. We answer the quartz versus marble vanity top question on almost every job in Dubai, so here is the honest version.

Where marble wins: master ensuites, powder rooms and any bathroom a guest will see. The stone is the focal point, and a good slab does more for the room than any tile choice. Where it does not: a shared family bathroom used by children, or a sink area where hair dye, nail polish remover and whitening toothpaste are routine. Those are quartz jobs, and we will say so before you spend the money.

Thickness, edge profile and veining: matching your marble top to the vanity carcass

A 20 mm slab is the working standard for a vanity top in Dubai. Go to 30 mm, or a 20 mm slab with a 40 mm built-up edge, when you want the top to read as a solid block. Every custom marble vanity unit we build is drawn from the carcass upward, so the stone never arrives as an afterthought.

Spec points that matter:

  • Slab thickness: 20 mm for undermount basins, 30 mm for a freestanding look, 40 mm laminated edge for visual weight
  • Surface finish: polished for a powder room, honed or brushed for a daily-use family bathroom
  • Edge profile: straight polished, mitred 45 degree, bullnose or chamfered, chosen to match the door profile below
  • Overhang: 20 to 30 mm past the carcass front, aligned with the drawer line
  • Veining: book-matched or run continuously across a double basin vanity so the two halves read as one slab
  • Carcass: moisture-resistant board or marine ply, sealed inside, with a PVC or aluminium toe kick rather than raw board
  • Basin type: undermount needs 20 mm minimum, vessel basins work on any thickness

The top and the carcass are cut from the same approved drawing. That is what stops the overhang drifting out of line with the door fronts, which is the most common fault we are called in to correct on other people's work.

Sealing and care for marble tops in Dubai

Seal the top on installation, then re-apply a penetrating sealer every 6 to 12 months. In Dubai the interval is driven by hard water and bathroom cleaning products, not by how careful you are.

  • Use a penetrating sealer. Topical film sealers peel and look worse than bare stone once they fail.
  • Test with a water drop. If a drop darkens the stone within a few minutes instead of beading, it is time to re-seal.
  • Wipe the tap base and basin rim dry after use. Most etching starts with water left standing overnight.
  • Keep vinegar, lemon, bleach and abrasive cream away from marble. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner, around AED 30 to 60 a bottle.
  • Use a tray under soap dispensers and toothbrush cups to stop ring marks.
  • Watch the usual suspects: hair dye, nail polish remover, perfume and whitening toothpaste.

Marble top bathroom vanity cost in Dubai

Our all-in price is AED 6,000 to 8,000 per vanity unit. That covers the carcass, the natural stone top, basin and tap cut-outs, the upstand, sealing and installation. There is no separate stone-cutting invoice later.

A worked example, a 1,200 mm double vanity in a Dubai Marina apartment bathroom:

  • Moisture-resistant carcass with two soft-close drawers: included
  • 20 mm natural marble top, honed, cut as a single length: included
  • Two undermount basin cut-outs and two tap holes: included
  • 100 mm upstand sealed to the wall: included
  • On-site sealing and clean down: included
  • Delivery and installation in Dubai Marina: included
  • Total: AED 7,200

Marble top vanity cost in Dubai moves with four variables. Stone choice: plain white and beige marbles sit at the lower end, while dramatic grey or green veined slabs, or a 30 mm slab, push toward AED 8,000. Size and cut-outs: an 1,800 mm run with two undermount basins costs more than a 900 mm single. Edge profile: a mitred 45 degree edge is more labour than a straight polish. Plumbing: if the waste or supply has to move, that is licensed plumbing work and it sits outside the vanity price.

Abu Dhabi villa jobs usually land at the upper end of the range because longer double runs and thicker stone are more common there. For how this compares with other unit types, read what a custom vanity costs in Dubai, then get a marble top vanity quote against your own measurements.

How we fabricate: Dubai workshop, approved drawing, templating and installation

Everything is built in our own Dubai workshop from your approved drawing, then templated against the real wall, then installed. Nothing is cut before you sign off the drawing.

  1. Measure and draw. We visit, take internal dimensions and produce a 1:1 drawing showing vanity width, depth, basin positions, tap positions, upstand, edge profile and drawer layout.
  2. Slab selection. You pick the actual slab. Veining differs between slabs of the same marble, so a catalogue image is not enough.
  3. Workshop fabrication. Carcass cut and edge-banded, top cut, profiled and drilled, drawers assembled and aligned, stone edges sealed.
  4. Dry fit. The unit is assembled and checked against the drawing before it leaves the workshop.
  5. Site templating. Most Dubai Marina apartment bathrooms have walls that run out by 10 to 20 mm. We scribe the upstand and end panel to the wall rather than filling the gap with silicone.
  6. Installation. Unit set and levelled, basin waste and trap connected, neutral-cure silicone at every wet joint, site cleaned down.
  7. Sign-off. You check the finished vanity against the approved drawing.

Where installation touches walls or moves drainage, the work has to comply with Dubai Municipality and DET requirements for the building, and most apartments and villas also ask for a building management or developer NOC before drilling or altering a wet area. We prepare the drawing set you need for that approval. A straight replacement in the same position, using the same drainage and supply points, normally does not need it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a marble top bathroom vanity cost in Dubai?

Our made-to-measure vanities are AED 6,000 to 8,000 all in, which includes the carcass, the natural stone top, basin and tap cut-outs, sealing and installation. A 1,200 mm double vanity with a 20 mm honed marble top typically comes in around AED 7,200. Heavily veined slabs, 30 mm thickness and longer runs push the figure toward the top of the range.

How long does a custom marble vanity take to build?

About 14 days from approved drawing to installed unit. Fabrication itself is the quick part. The days that most often get added are the ones spent choosing and approving the slab, and waiting on a building NOC if the work touches walls or drainage.

Is a marble vanity top better than quartz in Dubai?

Marble looks better and can be honed and repolished if it etches, which quartz generally cannot. Quartz resists staining and etching with almost no maintenance. For a master ensuite or powder room marble is worth the care, while a busy family bathroom is usually better served by quartz.

Does a marble vanity top need sealing in Dubai?

Yes. We seal the top on installation and recommend re-applying a penetrating sealer every 6 to 12 months. Hard water, frequent cleaning and heavy bathroom use break the sealer down faster here than in cooler climates, and a bathroom with direct afternoon sun often needs it twice a year.

Do I need approval to replace a bathroom vanity in Dubai?

If the new vanity goes in the same position with the same drainage and water supply points, structural approval is normally not required. Where installation touches walls or moves drainage, the work has to comply with Dubai Municipality and DET requirements and most buildings also ask for a management NOC. We prepare the drawing set you need for that.

Which areas do you install in?

We manufacture in our own Dubai workshop and install in Dubai Marina, across Dubai and in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi villa projects often involve longer double vanities and thicker stone, so we quote those after an on-site measure rather than over the phone.
