Custom Solid Wood Bathroom Vanity Dubai: Wood vs Plywood

The carcass behind your doors decides whether a bathroom vanity survives in Dubai, not the finish on the front. Solid wood, marine plywood and moisture-resistant MDF behave very differently in a humid apartment, and the price gap between them is narrower than most homeowners expect.

Why the carcass decides how long your vanity lasts in Dubai's humidity

The carcass is the box behind the doors and drawers, and in a UAE bathroom it fails long before the doors do.

Indoor humidity here swings from roughly 40 percent under air conditioning to 90 percent and above in late August. Add daily shower steam and a mop that pushes water along the plinth. The vulnerable point is any raw edge. Water sits at the sink cut-out, behind the tap base and along the bottom edge of the unit, and if that edge is sealed with a thin melamine strip, moisture wicks into the core. Solid wood and marine plywood handle this when they are sealed on every face. MDF and standard particle board do not. We cover tops and finishes in more detail in our guide to bathroom vanity materials in Dubai.

Solid wood: where it wins and what it costs

Solid hardwood is the most repairable carcass you can put in a Dubai bathroom. An oak or teak box can be sanded and re-sealed years later, and hinges keep their grip because screws bite into timber rather than into glue and dust.

We work with kiln-dried oak, teak and ash, and we seal all six faces of every panel, including the back and the underside that nobody sees. Seal every face and let the frame move with the seasons, and a solid wood vanity stays flat for 12 to 20 years. Seal one face only and the panel cups within two summers. A solid wooden bathroom vanity in Dubai is not a mould risk by default. The risk comes from water standing on an unsealed edge.

Cost sits at the top of our band. A made-to-measure solid wood vanity with a natural stone top runs AED 7,000 to 8,000 all-in. A 1,200mm double unit in solid oak with a Carrara marble top, two drilled sink cut-outs and soft-close runners quotes at AED 7,400.

Marine plywood: the humidity-proof middle ground

Marine plywood bonded with WBP glue is the sensible middle option when budget matters more than service life. The glue line does not break down in damp air, which is exactly where ordinary plywood fails.

Specify BS1088 grade or an equivalent marine rating, at 18mm minimum for a vanity carcass. It is stable, lighter than solid wood and takes paint or veneer cleanly. Two weak points need attention. Edges should be glued and banded rather than ironed on, and hinges should be screwed into a solid timber mounting block rather than straight into the ply face.

A marine plywood carcass with the same natural stone top usually lands at AED 6,000 to 6,800 all-in. That is around 20 to 30 percent below a comparable solid wood build, with an expected life of 8 to 12 years in a ventilated bathroom.

MDF and HDF: when they are fine and when they fail

Moisture-resistant MDF is acceptable in a powder room or a guest bathroom used twice a week. It is the wrong choice for a family bathroom.

MR-MDF, often sold as green core MDF, copes with ambient humidity but not with standing water. Once moisture reaches the core the fibres swell and the board never returns to shape. HDF behaves the same way, only more slowly because the density is higher.

It works for painted shaker doors and drawer fronts, which are more stable than solid wood when painted, and for closed units set away from the shower. It fails under a sink with a slow leak, on a unit sitting directly on a floor that gets mopped daily, and in any bathroom without an extractor fan. Standard particle board is worse again and swells inside one season, so we do not use it. A moisture-resistant MDF carcass with a stone top comes in below our standard AED 6,000 to 8,000 band, but we still steer clients in Dubai Marina and Abu Dhabi towers toward solid wood or marine plywood, because those bathrooms are compact and ventilation is limited.

How we build a solid wood vanity in our Dubai workshop

Every unit is built in our own workshop in Dubai Marina, to a drawing you approve before the first cut. Nothing is subcontracted, which is how the timeline holds.

  1. Free site measure. We check the wall for square, the plumbing positions, the door swing and the skirting height. In Dubai Marina towers we also check the service lift and any building work permit the management office requires.
  2. Drawing approval. You receive a dimensioned drawing showing width in millimetres, drawer layout, sink position and top overhang. We then build 1:1 to whatever you sign.
  3. Timber selection and milling. Boards are cut, jointed and dry-fitted before assembly.
  4. Carcass assembly and sealing. All six faces sealed, edges banded, mounting blocks set for hinges and runners.
  5. Stone templating and top fabrication. The top is templated once the carcass is set in place, so the cut-out matches the actual sink.
  6. Delivery and installation. Normally around day 14 from drawing approval, including silicone, splashback and hardware adjustment.

What drives your quote: size, wood species, stone top, hardware

Four variables move the number, and size matters most.

  • Size. A 600mm single vanity uses roughly half the timber and half the stone of a 1,500mm double. Width and drawer count drive the quote more than anything else.
  • Wood species. Kiln-dried oak and ash sit mid-range. Teak and walnut cost more because of import and cutting waste.
  • Stone top. An engineered quartz top on a 1,200mm unit usually accounts for AED 800 to 1,400 of the total. Book-matched marble pushes higher.
  • Hardware. Soft-close runners and hinges add roughly AED 200 to 500. Backlit mirrors, drawer organisers and leak-proof sink bases are extras.

Put together, a 1,200mm custom solid wood vanity in oak with a marble top and quality soft-close hardware in Dubai Marina quotes at AED 7,400 all-in. The identical drawing in marine plywood comes to about AED 6,400. A wider 1,800mm unit for an Abu Dhabi villa lands at the top of the band once you add a second sink and a stone upstand.

Frequently asked questions

Does solid wood warp in Dubai humidity?

Sealed solid wood does not warp in Dubai humidity, provided all six faces are sealed and the frame is built to allow seasonal movement. Warping usually comes from a panel sealed on one side only, or from water pooling on the top edge. In our builds we seal the back and the underside too, which is the face most workshops skip.

Is solid wood much more expensive than plywood for a bathroom vanity in Dubai?

The gap is smaller than most people assume. A marine plywood carcass with a stone top usually quotes at AED 6,000 to 6,800, while solid oak or ash sits at AED 7,000 to 8,000 all-in. That works out at roughly 20 to 30 percent more for a carcass that can be sanded back and refinished years later.

How long does it take to build a custom vanity?

From approved drawing to installed unit, around 14 days. Measuring and drawing approval usually add a few days before that, depending on how quickly you sign off the design. Stone templating happens after the carcass is set in place, and the top is normally fitted on the final day.

Can I keep my existing stone top on a new vanity?

Usually yes, if the slab is intact and thick enough. We template from your existing top so the new carcass matches the cut-outs and overhang exactly. If the top is cracked near a tap hole or has been repaired before, we will tell you at the measure and quote a replacement.

Do you install the vanity or supply only?

We install. Our team delivers, fits and levels the unit, connects the plumbing points, seals the stone top and adjusts the hinges and runners. We work in occupied apartments and villas across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, so floors and lifts are protected during the job.
