Why solid wood carcasses are back in Dubai bathrooms, and when they are the wrong call
Solid timber is back because clients want grain they can see and a carcass that can be sanded and refinished instead of replaced. It is the wrong call when the vanity sits in the shower splash zone, when the room has no working extraction, or when the old unit came out with mould on the back panel.
A Dubai bathroom holds 55 to 65 percent relative humidity for much of the year and pushes past 80 percent during a hot shower. Timber takes on and releases that moisture, so it moves. Kiln dried teak, oak, walnut and ash handle that movement when they are sealed on all six faces. A soft, unsealed board cups and splits inside one summer.
Species matters more than the phrase solid wood. Teak is the most stable option for a wet room and costs the most. Oak and walnut suit a dry side vanity with a good lacquer or oil finish. Mixed imported hardwood can look right and behave badly. We turn down a solid timber request when the layout will fail, and we say so before you pay a deposit.

Warranty reality decides more arguments than the material itself. No manufacturer can offer a lifetime warranty on a board carcass in a wet zone without relying on you never claiming. The waterproofing details that actually matter
These five details decide whether a waterproof bathroom vanity in Dubai still looks new after three summers. They cost very little at build stage and a lot to put right later.
- Back edge sealed. Two coats of sealer on the rear edge plus a silicone bead against the wall, so splash running down the tiles cannot wick into the board.
- Sealed plinth or wall bracket. The base sits on a sealed 100 mm plinth or a steel bracket, never flat on the floor where mop water sits.
- Drainage clearance. Keep at least 30 mm between the waste trap and the drawer base. A trap touching timber passes condensate straight into it.
- Stone top overhang. 15 to 20 mm past the carcass front with a drip groove, so water falls to the floor instead of running back under the unit.
- Ventilation. An extractor sized to the room, or a window that genuinely opens. This is the cheapest protection you can add.

- Width and drawer count. Every extra 300 mm and every extra soft close drawer set adds cost.
- Timber species. Teak sits above oak and ash, and walnut sits between them.

- Stone slab. A standard slab costs less than a book matched premium one, and keeping your own top removes that line entirely.

Installation across the UAE, and how the unit holds up after 12 months
We install across the UAE, from Dubai and Sharjah to Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates, and removal of the old unit is part of the job rather than an extra.
- Remove and dispose of the old vanity.
- Check the isolation valves and replace any that do not shut off cleanly.
- Inspect the waste trap for height and leaks, then set the new waste.
- Level the carcass on the tiled floor with adjustable feet, never with loose packers.
- Fix to the wall, then silicone the plinth and the back edge.
- Fit the top, connect the basin and taps, run water and check every joint.
- Clean the site and hand over with care notes.
After 12 months of Dubai summer, expect to re-tighten hinges, check that the back edge silicone is intact, and refresh an oiled finish. A sealed teak or oak carcass usually needs nothing more.

Does solid wood warp in Dubai?
Solid timber moves with humidity, but kiln dried teak or oak sealed on every edge does not warp in a normal Dubai bathroom. Warping usually traces back to unsealed cut edges, a unit sitting flat on a wet floor, or splash from a shower next to the vanity. If your bathroom has no working extraction and a floor drain beside the unit, we will recommend marine plywood instead.
Is solid wood better than MDF for bathroom cabinets?
In a humid or wet bathroom, yes. MDF swells permanently once water reaches the core, especially at hinge holes and cut edges, while solid timber and marine plywood tolerate moisture and can be repaired. MDF with a good HPL or lacquer finish is fine in a guest bathroom or powder room that stays dry.
How long does a bespoke vanity take?

Can I keep my existing marble top?
Usually yes, if the marble is at least 20 mm thick, flat, and the new carcass matches its existing cut outs. We template the top and build the unit to suit, which saves roughly AED 1,300 to 2,000 on the slab. If the marble is cracked or the basin cut out sits in the wrong place, a new top is the better spend.
